Our Family’s Joyful Day at Morgan’s Wonderland: A True Wonderland of Inclusion and Accessibility

As a mom to a daughter with special needs, finding a place where she can fully enjoy herself—without the usual limitations or challenges—isn’t easy. So, when we made our way to Morgan’s Wonderland in San Antonio, Texas, I felt a sense of hope and excitement that maybe, just maybe, we’d finally found a place where she could be herself and have fun without barriers. Morgan’s Wonderland is no ordinary theme park; it’s a place designed to bring people of all abilities together, giving everyone the chance to laugh, play, and experience joy without limitations.

What Makes Morgan’s Wonderland Truly Special?

Morgan’s Wonderland is the world’s first ultra-accessible theme park, and it has a story that resonates deeply with families like ours. The park was founded by Gordon Hartman, a father inspired by his daughter, Morgan, who has cognitive and physical disabilities. One day in 2006, during a family vacation, he saw Morgan trying to play with other kids in a hotel pool. The other children didn’t know how to engage with her, leaving her feeling left out. This simple moment of yearning sparked a mission within Gordon to create a space where children and adults of all abilities could interact and play without obstacles.

In 2010, that dream became a reality when Morgan’s Wonderland opened its doors. Every attraction and every detail of this park was designed with inclusivity in mind. The park isn’t just accessible in theory; it actively works to foster understanding, empathy, and connection. Morgan’s Wonderland is a place where everyone can belong—a quality that can be life-changing for families like ours.

Smooth Ticketing and a Welcoming Check-In Experience

The experience at Morgan’s Wonderland starts with the ticketing process, which is refreshingly smooth and inclusive. When buying tickets online, there’s an option to specify if someone in your group has a disability, and upon arrival, the staff’s kindness and attention to detail shine through. When we checked in, they asked if our daughter would be comfortable wearing a bracelet for her “Joy’s Pass.” This thoughtful gesture was so refreshing because it’s rare to find places that consider sensory sensitivities so openly. Our daughter doesn’t tolerate bracelets well, and when we let them know, they didn’t bat an eye. Instead, my husband wore her bracelet in addition to his own. It was no problem at all.

The “Joy’s Pass” system is another feature that demonstrates Morgan’s Wonderland’s commitment to accessibility. Guests with disabilities wear these special bracelets, which allow them priority access to attractions. For us, this meant that if there had been any lines, we could have skipped right to the front—much like Disney’s Disability Access Service (DAS) pass, which we used on our family trip to Disney World. Both passes serve the same purpose: removing the stress of waiting in long lines for guests who may have sensory sensitivities or challenges with patience in crowded spaces. If you’re curious about how Disney’s DAS system works, you can read about our experience with it here.

Though each park has its own unique approach, the Joy’s Pass and DAS pass both prioritize guests’ comfort, allowing families to focus on the experience itself rather than managing challenges that could arise in a traditional setting. It’s these thoughtful, well-designed features that allow us to share such wonderful experiences with our daughter, even in large, bustling environments.

A Wonderland of Accessible Fun and Thoughtful Design

The entire park is filled with attractions designed to be accessible to everyone. Our daughter absolutely loved the colorful play zones, and knowing that each area was thoughtfully crafted with inclusivity in mind allowed us to relax and simply enjoy our time together.

One of the highlights for us was the wheelchair-accessible carousel. It was more than just a “ride” for our daughter; it was an experience that she could enjoy fully and safely. And the detail that really stood out? The “try before you ride” feature. Before hopping on the moving carousel, there’s a stationary horse outside where families can practice sitting, helping kids get comfortable before committing to the full ride. For families with children who may be wary of new experiences, this small but intentional feature makes all the difference.

Every ride, from the Ferris wheel to the swings, is designed to ensure everyone has options. There are adaptive swings for those who need extra support, sensory play zones for those who benefit from quieter spaces, and wheelchair-accessible ramps and paths throughout the park. Even simple touches like wide walkways and shade structures show the depth of thought put into making this park a space where everyone can feel safe and comfortable.

An Inclusive and Diverse Staff

One of the things that truly warmed my heart was seeing the diversity within the park staff. Many of the team members have visible disabilities, and their kindness and attentiveness added a special element to our day. There was something incredibly powerful about seeing people with disabilities not only welcomed but actively participating as valued members of the staff. It’s rare to see this level of inclusivity in the workforce, and it added an extra layer of respect and admiration for Morgan’s Wonderland’s commitment to creating a space that’s truly for everyone.

Morgan’s Inspiration Island: A Must-Return for Our Family

Although we visited in the off-season, and the water park was closed, we’re already planning to return in the summer so we can experience Morgan’s Inspiration Island. This ultra-accessible water park, which opened in 2017, is designed with features like waterproof wheelchairs and gentle splash zones for kids who might be overwhelmed by bigger water parks. We’re thrilled to know that Morgan’s Wonderland extends its accessible ethos to the water park, and we can’t wait for our daughter to enjoy that experience as well.

Supporting Families as a Special Needs-Certified Travel Agent

I work with families to anticipate sensory sensitivities, arrange special accommodations, and even secure adaptive equipment when needed.

But my commitment goes beyond the logistical. I genuinely want to empower families who might feel hesitant to take that first step toward travel. I know from personal experience that even with the best-laid plans, things may not go perfectly, but that doesn’t mean the experience won’t be worthwhile. My goal is to help families find joy in exploring the world, knowing that someone is there to support them, troubleshoot issues, and create alternative plans when needed. Travel should be a source of joy and connection, not a source of stress and fear, and I’m here to help make that possible.
